UK Government punts ads on YouTube

Oh, these YouTube stories just keep a-coming. Latest one comes courtesy of Drew B who points out that the Cabinet Office has posted two public information films.

They’re not hugely fascinating but you can take a look at them here and here. Between them they have had about 160 views and have two subscribers so far.

Nice to see the COI playing in this space. I think maybe a different approach might win out on YouTube. This seems a little too slick and corporate video-like to attract an audience.

It would be interesting to have more personal, video blog-style efforts from some of the people trying to get the message across through these videos, things that might attract interest and responses from people.

  1. Totally agree. One of the comments about the videos says “Great. Government propaganda on YouTube”

The point of social media is to engage genuinely with audiences (or is that networks?) rather than simply using it as a channel for traditional types of communication.

A slick video will still look like “government propaganda” – even (or especially?) on YouTube.

The real benefits of YouTube are still to be realised by the government. The government’s work affects every one of us, so used in the way you suggest gives HM Government a real chance to enage with its ‘consumers’.

  2. Oh yes, but well done them for starting the ball rolling!
