Antony,
I am not sure of any of this – but I have the suspicion that it might be the case and that networks in social media need to be understood in a very different way to how we used to look at networks.
Networks in social media are definitely not about about influencers (places or even nodes). Influence is social media networks is more about spaces than places.
Networks in social media are not fixed, they are created according to the information or connection that is desired – in much the same way that a search query creates a specific network (or space).
For every action, there is a network (or there is a network emerging), therefore we, via our actions, define our networks more than they define us.
That said, connection is what it is all about. The social media space is not a medium of information, it is a medium of connection and action. However, perhaps in the past the function of connection has been tied to nodes and influencers because these points of distribution were how information was spread. But now connection can be dependant on the information itself, independant of means or points of distribution – after all the social media revolution is essentially about the fact that information has been separated from distribution.
Here is something I wrote on this a while back http://richardstacy.com/2009/09/21/are-social-n…
Still half-formed thoughts!
