The reputation he ruined on Google: that eBay laptop story…

My best advice to this man? Change your name. It will take a very long time for Google to forget all of this when anyone (prospective partners, friends, employers) search for your name…

There are 117 entries for the man’s name on Google now – I doubt he would want anyone to see any of them.

  1. And one more since you posted—this is karma at work!

  2. I’m quite suprised we haven’t seen more of this type of thing already. In an age when anyone and everyone can make content available for the world to see, I thought there would be a number of scandalous (and probably anonymous) blogs out there already. Ex-lovers, ex-employees, dodgy dealers etc etc.

It’s quite scary to think about it. No matter how many LinkedIn endorsements, eBay positive feedbacks etc you might have, something like this could ruin a career…and maybe a lot more. And even worse, the claims don’t have to be true necessarily. It could be just a hate campaign by someone you’ve pi$$ed off somewhere down the line.

  3. That’s very true, Stephen – all it takes is one nutter and you’ll be cleaning reputational ordure up online for weeks…

Linked IN is a funny site in its own right too. Once you’ve accepted a link it’s very hard to downgrade it or remove someone from your network…

  4. Crime doesn’t pay

at least it pays less now that everybody uses Google to check out people before they meet them. I though long and hard before commenting on the plight of Amir Massoud Tofangsazan, but in the end decided that it is…

  5. Just as an aside, the LinkedIn connection removal is a simple email—I’ve found it to be fairly painless and they don’t ask any questions.

  6. Thanks, Jack – I didn’t realise that re: LinkedIn – much appreciated!

  7. You’re very welcome, Antony!

  8. Antony, an update: the gentleman’s name now fetches 11,000 references in Google.

  9. Truly incredible. I’ve ben out of the loop for a few days – hoping to find out if there is more news on the investigation as well. Thanks, Jack.

  10. Mostly foreign media now, Antony—I have seen the odd thing in Dutch and in French. I think the mass media in the UK have covered and have got over the story, unless the Crown decides to prosecute. Google references cracked 20,000 today, and a second blog has started that accepts comments (as the original one was overwhelmed).
