BBC podcasts 49 shows

The BBC has extended its highly successful trial of offering podcasts of its radio content. BBC podcasts already feature prominently in charts of popular podcasts across the English-speaking world, with Radio One‘s Chris Moyles currently Number 2 in the iTunes charts and several other podcasts in the top 20.

There will now be a total of 49 programmes available as podcasts, with additions including Start the Week, Front Row and Broadcasting House. The BBC’s own story quotes Controller of BBC Radio and Music Interactive:

"…The feedback we get from the
trial is helping to inform our strategy for ‘audio on demand’, giving listeners
the control they are becoming increasingly used to in the digital world.
Downloading and podcasting are potentially fantastic ways for us to make our on
demand programmes as accessible as live radio always has been."

This news follows on from the survey last week from the UK Association of Online Publishers that claims that one third of UK publishers are already trying out podcast services. I’m not sure how robust the sample / methodology of the survey was, it seems to be delegates to a conference about podcasting and publishing, but the story does add some evidence to the growing momentum of the new medium.
