Radio One DJs evangelise social media

Welcome to the beginning of the UK social media mainstream.

More evidence of the demand in the UK for US social media youth phenomenon myspace as Radio 1 DJs start setting up their own pages, reported by Simon Dickson here.

I mentioned this to a client today as I heard Jo Whiley the other day discussing her obsession with the service to the point of dreaming about links. Sounded about as close as you get to a free ad on national radio. Sounded like every listener who hadn’t heard of it yet would be logging on that day.

And here’s Chris Moyles‘s myspace site.

Robin Hamman provides an interesting commentary on the subject here:

Using third party services, like myspace, or simply linking to groups
created by users of services, could allow media organisations to
continue to engage with their audiences without the cost and risks of
moderation, discussion hosting, development time, bandwidth, etc.

Mandatory myspace facts to mention: it is due to launch a UK version any day now, there are 47 million users and the service is own by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation (bought a few months ago for US$ 580 million). Mr Murdoch’s team is now working out how to make money from it.

  1. It’s surprising how many music artists are using Myspace also. What better way to promote yourself to the fans and give them a sense of being closer to their idols than using the Internet?

I’ve been tracking some music artists using Myspace in my del.icio.us account:
