IBM’s emerging social media communications strategy

Worried about your Second Life avatar consuming more electricity than the average Brazilian? Well worry a little less as IBM embarks on a $ 1 billion initiative to reduce the environmental impact of its data centres.

I like this approach and I especially like the emerging social media communications strategy at IBM that it seems to indicate. Naturally we have a big corp comms site packed with press releases and background information…

Then we have The Raised Floor, a blog written by senior IBM and partner company executives, all about the issues around energy consumption in data centres…

Then we have the Second Life video all about the project and how IBM is using the virtual world to further its research…

Then we have some IBM-ers at another great blog Game Tomorrow putting out DIY promotional videos to promote the blog…

So what’s the strategy? I think it’s to let people get on with it once you’ve set the direction from the centre. It will be interesting to watch how comms develop around this issue for IBM as it is bound to touch directly the interests of a huge amount of their people – bloggers and otherwise…

: : When searching for Project Big Green I noticed that the Greener Computing news portal has bid on that word in Google. Smart move… maybe IBM should bid too…
