Why does Timesonline bury its feeds?

A few months on now from the Timesonline‘s relaunch and there are still some holes that need patching from my point of view.

Sure you can see the most popular and most commented articles up front on the front page – nice alternate, user-driven way to navigate the content…

And should you be moved to spread the word about an article you like you can print it, email it and post it to del.icio.us or Newsvine (no Digg, here…)…

There have been plaudits aplenty for the new Timesonline’s design, but I’m still finding holes in what looks from a distance like an intelligent redesign. For instance, where are the RSS feeds?

Sure, there’s a wide selection of feeds (tick that box) available, but not from the page. You have to dig down to the bottom of the page and select your feeds rather than just clicking on the orange subscribe button on your browser.

Perhaps its a technical glitch or an obscure usability problem, but whatever, the Timesonline team should be thinking about fixing this . As well as making sure you appear on Google News news sources need to be as easy to use and redistribute as possible. Fiddly RSS is

: : BTW: Top prize for RSS wholesomeness in my book goes to the BBC which will help you to build your own RSS newsfeed around a keyword.

  1. Shockingly, the BBC still doesn’t have full text feeds, though, and so is a bad example, IMHO. I don’t know why not, though, and no-one’s been able to explain it to me. It’s their duty, isn’t it, to get the information out as far as possible?

  2. I’ve never been too bothered with the full feed thing – especially when it comes to feeds from news sites: I like to scan a lot of news from them, so the format they come in from the Beeb works for me.

I do understand the need for the option, though…
