IBM has 950 people in Second Life

Reading the transcript of a presentation that Roo Reynolds, IBM’s metaverse evangelist gave to the Business Communicators of Second Life (in the SL world, naturally) I was struck by his statement that almost 1,000 IBM people are active in the game world.

So much more meaningful than just saying that IBM has an island there (which it does), or has opened a store or is giving away whatever.

Reynolds, via is avatar Algernon Spackler, goes on to explain that the company now has a “Virtual Universe Community” and that it has overtaken IM for some people as a way of staying in touch.

I take two measures of the conversation’s level-headedness: Reynolds/Spackler stresses that while the potential for SL is massive, it is very much early days. Also everyone is clear that as far as being a communications tool, SL is a very non-confidential space to speak in.
