100 years of PR

I need to get back to the office. They’ve started talking about PR without me…

But sheriouslsy folks, Spannerworks CTO Paul Doleman has taken today as the 100th birthday of PR – or at least the press release – and says that the turn of its century the discipline is “terminally ill” with a slim chance of recovery…

He dates the birth of PR, or the first press release back to a train wreck on the Pennsylvania Railroad (which also holds the initials PR, conspiracists will note) and notes a parallel with today:

Right now confusion and excitement abound. Bloggers, wade in and rightly debunk the control freaks. Marketers try to hold onto the last vestages of traditional brand management. Others hail PR as dead and usher in new business models – it does look rather like a train wreck again.

He makes a good case. I’m staying on holiday… :-)
