Google buys YouTube

Great to see the YouTube / Google deal go through: apart from free-ing up the top half of the Techmeme aggregator page for other news, as I said before, this is the right deal for both parties.

As a satisfied user of both companies services I also feel good about the future of the combined offer.

The New York Times reveals that Google beat Microsoft, Viacom, Yahoo and the News Corporation to the deal.

Interesting too to see Google move quickly to head off some of the potential copyright issues. From the NYT:

Earlier today, YouTube signed three separate deals that should provide some legal protection from copyright infringement claims. One of the deals will allow YouTube to broadcast CBS programming. In addition, YouTube reached agreements with the Universal Music Group and Sony BMG Music Entertainment that will allow it to broadcast music videos.

: : Sign of the times: Michael Arrington of TechCrunch was being interviewed on the Today programme’s early business news slot for his views on the deal.
