YouTube: where bad ads go to die…

Or at least to show that they were never really alive.

The US government has decided to post 12 of its anti-drugs ads on YouTube.

Hyped – I would presume – as hard-hitting and edgy exposes of the misery of drug addiction when they hit American TV screens, six days on YouTube shows the full power of the ad-machine at work: only a handful have them have managed to attract over 1,000 views at the time of this posting.

Take away the hits that can be accounted for by the people in the government department and the ad agency taking a look and you’re left with a miserable performance.

In terms of connecting with your end-audience it would have been more cost effective to hand out leaflets in a night-club. Or spending the ad budget on buying drugs on the street might have been more effective…
