Brits scoop five Webbys

Not so much a case of "here come the Brits" we’re still here in the categories you would expect at the Webbys on Monday night (with a couple of exceptions).

  • Artist: Gorillaz (winning a ton of awards just like they did with the website for their first album)
  • Community: BBC Cumbria Digital Lives (Go regional Beeb, go)
  • News: BBC (Yes, yes, of course)
  • Newspaper: The Guardian (A deserved win)
  • Social networking: Bebo (Hurrah for the kids)

The Webby Awards describes itself thus:

The Webby Awards is the leading international award honoring excellence in web design, creativity, usability and functionality. Established in 1996 during the web’s infancy, the Webbys are presented by The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a 500-member body of leading web experts, business figures, luminaries, visionaries and creative celebrities.

A bit like the Oscars though, it’s a US event with Brits allowed to play too. I wonder what the rest of the world did online that was award winning?

  1. Granted, the guy behind Bebo is a Brit. But it’s stretching it a bit to call the company ‘British’, since he’s well and truly settled in San Francisco these days.

  2. Going with the Oscars theme, we’ll still count him then ;-)
