Yahoo! News is portal market leader, says Hitwise

Bill Tancer on the Hitwise analyst blogs has dug up some interesting stats comparing the big three GYM (stands for Google, Yahoo! and MSN) Web gorillas and how their various services stack up against one another for market share. See Mr Tancer’s post for the full run down.

Being a corporate comms animal first and foremost I was particularly interested in the news category. the original post only lists Yahoo! News as number 1, with 6.30 % market share and Google  News at  number 5 with just 1.90 %.

The full top 5, then is:

1. Yahoo! News – 6.30 %
2. Weather Channel – 5.59%
3. MSNBC – 3.96 %
4. CNN – 3.95%
5. Google News – 1.90 %

What is interesting to me is the massive comparitive reach that Yahoo! News has online, and therefore the importance of Associated Press (AP), who supply most of its stories.

In analysis for a couple of brand communications campaigns I’ve tracked, I’ve seen Reuters and AP leading along with BBC and CNN most online conversation. That is to say, they have been the most referenced sources for blog posts and message board discussions.

Given the time and resource, I would be really interested to look more deeply at the relative reach and influence of online news sources in blogs and other social media. Hopefully I’ll get that chance soon…
