Carphone “free” broadband under scrutiny

David Rossiter was not the only one to raise an eyebrow at Carphone Warehouse’s "free" broadband offer – now the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority is looking into things.

According to the Independent:

There are three main objections to the ads. One is that the service is
not as widely available as claimed. A second is the use of the term
"forever" and the third is the claim that the service is free, given
that customers must sign up to TalkTalk and pay a £30 connection fee.

There have been 40 complaints so far, including one from BT, would you Adam’n’Eve it? I wonder which bit they are complaining about?

I don’t reckon it will stick – I think the Independent is spinning this one a little hard. Or maybe they should change the claim to "dirt cheap", because a £30 connection charge is still very little to pay.

  1. Trouble is like London Busses, The TalkTalk (a subsiduray of Carphone Warehouse) web site is up and down like a yoyo. Ascording to Mark, the company spokesperson at Citigate, their PR firm, they have been experiencing 40,000 site hits a minute.

Meantime another company in the Group had four days downtime when serving up web pages for some customers (me included).

Better still, another of their communications consultants, Freud Communications has its web site down too.

Not quite of the Internet age one feels.
