Co-create a t-shirt today

As Hugh MacLeod closes down his t-shirt ambitions at gapingvoid.com so a co-create vibe t-shirt company opens in the UK.

My  mate Pete Goold at Punch Communications is working with these guys and nudged me to take a look and I think they look great. People submit designs for tees, visitors vote for them and the most popular get made.

They remind Bobbie Johnson at the Guardian of Threadless. It’s nice to see people running with ideas like this in the UK.

Funny thing is the more time you spend voting on designs, the more you start to feel like buying a t-shirt.

How long before people start submitting gapingvoid.com cartoons and cause a creative commons incident?  :-)

  1. I’m not sure the idea of ‘having your design turned into a t-shirt’ still has so much appeal, when it’s so easy to do it yourself. I’ve had very good experiences with Spreadshirt (www.spreadshirt.co.uk): upload your own designs and in minutes, you can have your very own online t-shirt shop. The range of possible products is growing all the time, and they let you set your own prices (and hence, commissions). My little side project hasn’t quite made enough for me to retire on, but it’s very heartening to think of people from all over Britain, Ireland and even Norway wearing stuff I designed. Hastily.

  2. That’s certainly true – and http://www.cafepress.com/ is another good example – but then as you say, you’re literally comparing the designs of a single individual , which may or may not hold great appeal to others, against a broad base of designs from both pro and amateur illustrators from around the world which are each voted for on merit.

Anyway, check out http://www.pulcomayo.com/ (the site of one of the many avant garde designers that submit pieces for collective consideration), which has one of the most innovative navigation methods of any site i’ve ever seen and some startling illustrations to boot to get a feel for the type of artist submitting entries.

If nothing else, it’s worth having a look through the ‘rating’ section (http://www.splittheatom.com/design/list1/index.asp) when you have a moment as there’s some really amazing art that’s been put forward.
