Reuters chief exec warns media against “protectionism”

Just in case anyone was still wondering if blogs are on the media’s agenda, the chief executive of Reuters took it upon himself this week to spell things out.

Speaking at he OPA (Online Publishers Association) conference in London,
Tom Glocer warned “old media” against ignoring blogs and consumer-generated
content. he said that there was a danger that the media would react with "protectionism", trying to keep out consumer content.

He added that there was a clear role for Reuters as a “content
facilitator, tools provider and editor” in the new media world, a clear echo of the Director of the BBC’s World Service and Global  News division Richard Sambrook’s comments last year   about the future of news organisations.

I note that UK media
coverage and mentions of social media (blogs, podcasts and wikis) is up about 500% on the same week last
year. I think the media is taking notice…

: : A couple of excellent first-hand accounts of Tom Glocer’s speech can be found at Buzzmachine and Media Guardian. The OPA might want to consider podcasting a conference like this in future – I would love to hear the speech.
