Noise cancelling headphones saved my flight

Noise cancelling headphones are the source and they are just about cheap enough for you to take a punt on…

I’ve always fancied a pair o’them Bose noise cancelling headphones, but never felt like they were exactly the thing I shsould be spending a few hundred pounds on at any given moment.

But wandering into Gatwick Dixons I found a whole load of Philips and Sony versions of the concept. While I’m sure the £50 Sony heaphones [late: damn – they are £15 cheaper on Amazon – so much for Dixons “tax-free” BS] aren’t as perfect as the Bose experience, or even as good as the £100+ versions by the same manufacturers on offer, I have to ssay they are pretty good. They cocoon you off just enough to make it easier to relax or get some work done.

Even in rough long haul economy on Continental ( three signs it’s not going to be a pleasant flight: 1. you have pay for your drinks – is it just me or where UK carriers are happy to ply you with high alititude sharpeners US attendants look at you like you’re some sort of degenerate; 2. staff seem harrassed from the moment you leave the ground, 3. colour so washed out on the video screens you end up with a kind colour in two tone) they buffer you just enough to make your music and movies sound A LOT better than through decent conventional headphones. I’ve a feeling these babies will be takaing up residence on my desk when I get back for those moments I have to shut off the din dynamic hubub of the Spannerworks offfice.

Anyhow: key to long haul: noise cancelling headphones, gin, and extra laptop batteries… hurrah!

    Darling …you are ranting again!

  2. Antony: You’ve broken the code to discover temporary and artificial nirvana via noise abatement headphones. Good show!
I was able to properly install the batteries in mine but have yet to be able to figure out where to add the gin? And I’m certainly not going to seek help from any of the surly cabin crew! :-)

  3. These have transformed my work environment – I can actually DO work at my desk with the head phones on rather than having to lock myself away in a meeting room or stay at home (the irony of not being able to produce work at a place that they call work…)

  4. Got a pair myself today – I hadn’t realised noise-reducing headphones had become affordable all of a sudden.

My report – very good *on* the tube and the train. I’m anxious about exposing fellow passengers to my tinny tum-ti-tum from regular headphones, so hopefully this will let me turn the volume down low enough to avoid it. Rubbish while at the stations and on the street because the microphone turns a breeze into a howl.
